'Needles' Canopy structure

This sculptural structure was one of two commissioned as entrance way features to a passageway in the centre of Walsall. The site at Butlers Passage, linking the bus terminal with the high street was completely refurbished, with new lighting, paving, etc..

Art for Architecture worked with colleagues Alan Smith of A.L.S. Landscape design and John Kamelski architect on the scheme.

John McKenna drew out the concept for the sculpture canopy and then rendered the design in 3D, using form z software see pictures below, working with Alistair Pollock to finalize the structural design. It was then fabricated at John's studio in Turnberry completely from stainless steel.

The needle theme, threads and pierced holes came from the historical usage of the passage as an entrance to the towns leather working area.
